Bring any boxes/cardboard and plastic bottles from home for Play Based Learning.
Term 4, Week 2: This week we have really been enjoying doing our Mindfulness, on Tuesday we had to guess the objects that were making sounds, and on Wednesday we did a session outside listening to the birds, the breeze and the buzz of cars. We had a great day with Mrs Smith on Thursday, we did some Halloween activities with her. We have been practising our numbers to 100 in Te Reo Māori. On Wednesday we had a great time exploring the garden.
Term 4, Week 1: This week we welcomed Hope to Room 7, Hope has come down from the Bay of Islands. We enjoyed writing about our holiday highlights on Monday, and on Friday we did some great buddy writing about picture prompts, we can't wait to continue with this next week! Our topic for this week has been Cyber safety, we have learned what information we should and should not give out over the internet and also we to do if we come across something we shouldn't see. On Thursday night the Kapa Haka group did a great job of performing at Family Works. This term's Kiwi Can value is Resilience. During Play Based Learning a lot of Room 7 have been practising counting money.
Term 3, Week 10: To finish off the term we had a short week with South Canterbury Anniversary on Monday. On Tuesday we had Mrs Chapman teaching us while Miss Dunbar did some testing. On Wednesday for writing we wrote about where Mr Stink might travel to next. In maths this week we have been looking at patterns. On Friday we really enjoyed watching the film Mr Stink, it was great to compare the similarities and differences between the film and the novel. Happy holidays everyone!
Term 3, Week 9: We had another exciting week in Room 7 this week. On Tuesday we had Mrs Chapman teaching us and on Thursday we did some drama activities with Ms Wilcox. This week we have been publishing our native many stories on Seesaw. Check out Mele's below. To finish off the week we had a lot of fun at the Mini Fair.
Term 3, Week 8: This week was Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, to celebrate we wrote our own traditional stories about native manu (birds) and how they came to be. Keep an eye out for the videos on Seesaw! We also draw and decorated Taniwha which we presented at assembly on Friday. To finish off the week we had Jump Rope for Heart, this was a great for us to get moving and it was a lot of fun!
Term 3, Week 7: We've had another great week in Room 7 this week. We have been busy writing back to our penpals at Napier Central School, we are really getting to know our buddies. This week was Tongan Language Week, to celebrate we have been speaking some Tongan, we are now able to say thank you (Mālō), count to 10 and greet others in Tongan. We were lucky enough to have a presentation and performance from the Tongan Society. To finish off the week the Year 4s had a wonderful day at Tekapo Springs, skating, snow tubing and relaxing in the hot pools. Even Miss Dunbar had a go at snow tubing!!
Term 3, Week 5: This was Mrs H's last week, we have loved her be a part of Room 7 and we wish her all the best for her teaching career. This week as part of our Living World topic we have been comparing similarities and differences between plants, humans and animals. We finished up our fractions topic for maths and Miss Dunbar was really proud of how much we improved. On Friday we had our last session of The arts, we have really enjoyed the new skills we have gained from this.
Term 3, Week 4: This week we have been doing lots of exciting things with Mrs H. For Play Based Learning we built structures out of pasta and play dough. For maths we have continued to work on finding fractions of whole numbers and of whole shapes. As part of our Living World topic we have planted some plants. Congratulations to the Pasifika group for coming 2nd in their section at FLAVA.
Term 3, Week 3: We've had another great week with Mrs H teaching us. On Monday & Tuesday we had Police Education Officer do K.O.S with us. For writing we have been writing letters to Mr Bogginton who wants to put a fish factory on our field!! In maths we have been working hard on fractions.
Term 3, Week 2: This week is Mrs H's first week of full control. We have been doing some fun things with her! In maths we have continued looking at fractions. On Friday we had our big times tables test and Miss Dunbar was very proud to see we ALL improved on our scores. Miss Dunbar has been teaching us the Keeping Ourselves Safe unit, next week we have the Police Education Officer coming. A big congratulations to Malisha Kini for winning a prize at Artarama! To finish off the week we had the school disco!

Term 3, Week 1: We've had a great start to Term 3. We are lucky to have Mrs H (a 3rd year teaching student) working with us. This week we have begun looking at Keeping Ourselves Safe. In maths we have been looking at fractions. Miss Dunbar's Dad built us a set of fraction scales, we thank him very much for this. On Friday we had our first session of our 2nd Arts choice, we are LOVING The Arts on Fridays.
Term 2, Week 10: We've had a great finish to Term 2. We wrote our own traditional stories to explain how Matariki was formed, we then published these digitally. Miss Dunbar was very proud of our stories! On Tuesday we finished our novel of the term Charlotte's Web. As a treat we watched the film on Thursday then on Friday we created our own webs and inside wrote a special word that described our class. On Thursday we looked at igneous rocks created by the volcano that is now Rangitoto Island. Congratulations Room 7 for being awarded Kiwi Can's Classiest Class! To finish off the week we had a Spelling Levels Test, we had our final Arts Friday for the first round and had a great school assembly. Happy holidays everyone!
Term 2, Week 8: It's been another great week in Room 7. We have been busy practising our speeches. We have continued investigating how volcanoes are formed. On Tuesday we had a great day with Mrs Chapman. We are really enjoying Arts Fridays. In maths we have continued working hard on multiplication. A big congratulations to Paytn who was awarded the 4Rs trophy.
Term 2, Week 7: We've had another busy week in Room 7 this week. On Monday we completed a writing test, Miss Dunbar was really proud of what we did. On Tuesday we were lucky to have Mrs Chapman once again! This week we have been working really hard on our speeches, we are looking forward to presenting them in a couple of weeks! On Thursday afternoon we went down to the bottom sandpit to create our own replicas of a volcanic eruption. On Friday we had our second Arts Friday, we had a lot of fun. To finish off the week we had a great construction-themed Play Based Learning session.
Term 2, Week 6: This week was a short week at school because on Monday we observed Queen's Birthday. On Tuesday we had a go at doing impromptu speeches, this was a lot of fun! During Maths we are continuing to work on our times tables, this is something you can work on at home too! On Thursday we were lucky enough to have Mrs Smith, we looked at how we can look after our Earth and begun looking at Matariki. On Friday we had out first Arts Interchange, we are divided into Pasifika, Print Making, Quilling, Paper Mache and Cardboard Creations, we're looking forward to doing this again next week. Term 2, Week 5: Talofa Lava, this week was Samoan Language Week, to celebrate in Room 7 this week we have learned to count to ten in Samoan, check out the video on Seesaw! In maths we've been continuing to work hard on our times tables. Miss Dunbar is very proud of the progress we are making. We LOVE playing Around the World and we get very competitive. As part of our topic we have continued focusing on the planets, their features and the order the go in. Check out Maddison & Nathan working together. On Friday we had a Levels Test for Spelling congratulations to Melody, Lincoln & Kade for moving up a set. To finish off the week we had Cross Country, well done everyone!
Term 2, Week 4: We've had another exciting week in Room 7 this week. On Tuesday we had had the Health Nurse come and deliver the SneezeSafe programme to us. We now know how we should cover our mouths safely when we cough or sneeze so we don't spread germs. We have continued to train hard for the Cross Country, we are looking forward to it next week. On Wednesday Room 9 hid some decorated rocks with meaningful messages on them for us to find. We had a lot of fun and find all 118!! We are looking forward to hiding them for another class to find. This term's topic is Space, this week we have been learning a lot about the different planets, we can now order them correctly! Term 2, Week 3: This week in Room 7 we have been training really hard for the Cross Country alongside Room 6, on Friday we even practised the real track over at the Botanical Gardens. On Tuesday we began our space topic, we pretended to dress up as astronauts and we had our chairs set up like a rocket and we pretended we were taking off to space, it was a lot of fun! We have some great wonderings about space that we will investigate in our unit. In honour of Screen Free Day for Play Based Learning on Wednesday we played some games, we had Guess Who, Knuckle Bones, Dominoes & Mancala. On Thursday we were thoroughly entertained by Strike Percussion. To finish off the week we hosted Junior Assembly and did a great Planet rap (check out Seesaw for the video!).
Term 2, Week 2: We've had another great week in Room 7 this week. In maths we have continued to focus on multiplication, some groups have been solving problems using animal strips. We were REALLY excited to receive letters this week from our pen pals at Napier Central School, we have begun our replies. On Wednesday we began training for the upcoming Cross Country, I'm sure we're going to get very fit with all that running! On Wednesday afternoon we were treated to a a great show by the New Zealand Playhouse, we even played our own Drama game back in the classroom! To Finish off the week we had Mrs Barratt and the School Disco!
Term 2, Week 1: We've had a great first week back at school in Room 7! On Monday and Tuesday we had Life Education. We now know lots about the circulatory system. We spent a lot of term learning about different organs in our body that are involved in the circulatory system. We also loved seeing Harold and hearing his jokes! In maths this week we have been learning to multiply by using repeated addition. On Wednesday and Thursday we were lucky enough to have Mrs Chapman teaching us about ANZAC Day, we made some great poppy art! On Friday the Year 4s were gifted a wonderful dictionary by Rotary - thank you Rotary!
Term 1, Week 11: This week we have had a great week in Room 7. We have been doing some Easter themed writing and reading activities. In Maths we have been working hard on our Basic Facts. We made some great Easter bunnies, once again showing our great art skills. On Monday we had a wonderful time making our own Marvelous Medicines inspired by the novel we finished George's Marvelous Medicine.
Term 1, Week 10: We've had a wonderful week in Room 7 this week. On Tuesday we had Room 9 join us for Play Based Learning, we had a great time playing alongside them and teaching them about Play Based Learning. On Wednesday we had our Art Exhibition, our art looked fantastic up on display. Thank you to all the parents and caregivers who came and supported this event. On Friday we presented our knowledge of Lindsay Crooks and showed our art at assembly.
Term 1, Week 9: In Room 7 this week we were very lucky to have artist Rachel Ratten come in and show us her artwork and her techniques. Rachel is a well-known Timaru artist and she showed us her Wood-cut prints. On Wednesday she came back to help us with our own collagraph prints - thank you very much Rachel for a wonderful experience it was great having your knowledge and expertise! On Wednesday we had a great Duffy Role Model assembly and we were excited to receive our Duffy Books. To finish off the week we had Room 9 join us for Play Based Learning, they loved seeing how Play Based Learning works.
Term 1, Week 8: Another great week in Room 7 this week! We have been working really hard on our Lindsay Crooks inspired art, this week we were inspired by his chalk piece of Brighton Beach in Dunedin, Miss Dunbar brought in the real version for us to look at and be inspired by. Come to the Art Exhibition on 5th April to check out are wonderful pieces. On Tuesday we received our postcards from Room 9 at Napier Central School and the best part is they want to be permanent pen pals with us so that's VERY exciting! On Wednesday morning we has Miss Wiffen from Waimataitai school come and watch our Play Based Learning, she was really impressed with all the things we know! On Friday we were learning about telling analog time we now know quarter past and half past! This is something you could work on at home too!
Term 1, Week 7: We finished our metaphor postcards this week and discovered that when they're all joined together they made a poster with a great message (see below) we can not wait to see what Room 9 at Napier Central School sends us! We have been working really hard on our Lindsay Crooks inspired paintings this week and have got them finished. You will notice we have used his technique of outlining in black on our paintings. We are getting excited about showing off our work at the Art Exhibition on 5th April. On Thursday we had Mrs Smith teaching us and we loved learning all about St Patrick's Day! The Room 7 stall at the School Fair was Balloon pop, a big thank you to Addie for helping Miss Dunbar set it up!
Term 1, Week 6: This week was a great week in Room 7. We are a part of the Get NZ Writing programme, for this we have had to complete a big sheet about our class (see photo below) stating our favourite things about Timaru, our favourite things about our classroom and some interesting words we know. We then begun looking at metaphors to describe our classroom Miss Dunbar's favourite was by Melody, Room 7 is a bunch of scientists and Miss Dunbar is creating geniuses. The next thing we will do is write our favourite metaphor about ourselves on a post card and then we send it all up to a school in Napier and they send us theirs! We are very excited about this! Thank you to the Whānau that came to 3-Way Interviews, kids you made Miss Dunbar very proud talking about your learning and your goals. For Play Based Learning this week we explored 'Out of Bounds' we had to use some great problem solving skills and be very resilient as it was quite steep! Everybody had to find something interesting and bring it back to class, check out what Lisita found below.
Term 1, Week 5: Another exciting week was had by the Room 7 students. We have had a busy week of tests this week completing STAR and PATS the kids did very well and this has shown Miss Dunbar where we are at with our learning. Miss Dunbar was very impressed with the recount we wrote about a special time we had with Whānau. On Thursday the Year 3s had the Junior Tabloid Sports, all the Year 3s made great role models and leaders for this great event. Thank you to the parents that came and supported! As part of our Visual Art unit this week we have continued to learn about Lindsay Crooks. This week we have painted and digitally drawn people Lindsay Crooks style.
Term 1, Week 4: We've had a wonderful week in Room 7 this week. On Tuesday the Year 4s in our class participating extremely well in the School Triathlon, well done Year 4s you really made Miss Dunbar proud! In Writing this week we have been learning the correct way to set out a letter to someone. On Wednesday we were extremely excited to see a Magic Show! For Play Based Learning this week we made a replica of the Great Wall of China and learned about erosion. We began exploring the artist Lindsay Crooks as part of our Visual Art Unit. As part of the Kellogg's Books for Active Minds Programme we were gifted the Māori traditional tale of Rona and the Moon. We really enjoyed the illustration and message of this story.
Term 1, Week 3: This week in Room 7 for Play Based Learning we have focused on Australia, we even had a go at throwing a boomerang! The children were far better at this than Miss Dunbar! in Writing this week we have been focusing on extending our sentences by adding adjectives. On Thursday we had Mrs Hinton teaching us, she taught us about Cubism art and we had a go at making our own. To finish off the week it was our turn to run Junior Assembly, Room 7 you made Miss Dunbar very proud!
Term 1, Week 2: We've had another great week in Room 7 this week. We have been doing lots during our Play Based Learning, focus this week on forces (especially gravity). In Maths we have been focusing on Place Value. On Thursday and Friday we were lucky enough to have Mrs Chapman teaching us. We spent some time studying the work of New Zealand artist and sculptor, Jeff Thompson. Check out our art inspired by him below.
Term 1, Week 1: Welcome back to another school year! This year Room 7 is made up of 26 Year 3 & 4 children. Everyone has settled back into school really well and we are having a lot of fun in Room 7. This Term's topic is Visual Art, so if we have any parents with artist connections we would love to know. This week we have begun doing Play Based Learning, a programme which is highly engaging and focuses on deeper thinking skills as well as the Key Competencys.
