Room 1 - 2019

Term 3

Week 9

What a wonderful week it has been!! We were treated with a magic show in the hall that had us all amazed. We love watching the magician pull cards out of his mouth, pull a bird out of a picture frame and do cool tricks with ropes. We also were very fortunate to have our Duffy Role Model Stella come and talk to us about books and her conservation efforts with native birds. We were then given two Duffy books to take home and share with our family. How lucky! Deb from the police also visited us in Room 1 to talk to us about keeping ourselves safe. Have a fabulous long weekend. Look forward to seeing everyone back for our last week of Term 3!

Week 7

This week at school, we have been celebrating Tongan Language Week. We were very privileged to watch our Tongan Cultural Group perform some special dances and sing some special songs. In Kiwi Can we were learning about facing challenges and how we need to take them on and tackle them. Our leaders gave us lots of challenges to complete with a skipping rope and some puzzles.

Week 5

This week we had a special visitor from ASB come to our classroom to talk to us about money. We learned the amounts of coins and notes, what we can do to earn money, and how to keep it safe. We also discussed the difference between needs and wants. We continued practicing our mindfulness in Kiwi Can by focusing on our breathing to keep us calm.

Week 4

Our sound of the week has been /x/. Our buddy class helped us create awesome treasure maps with our big X marks the spot! We have been doing some high quality writing which our teachers are both very proud of. In Kiwi Can we have been talking about feelings and ways to calm ourselves down when we become upset or frustrated.

Week 3

Mrs McFarlane and Mrs O'Donnell were fortunate enough to go on an Autism course this week. Luckily we had a wonderful time with Miss Mann who taught up all about the sound /v/. We were extremely crafty and took home some vroom vroom vans, volcano pictures and Victor Vegetable. We had lots of fun making our marble painted pictures. Mrs McFarlane and Mrs O'Donnell enjoyed the 3-way interviews with students and parents to talk about our learning journeys.

Week 1

Welcome back to a busy and exciting Term 3! We know you have had a wonderful holiday and are ready to hit the ground running with your learning. This term's focus in Kiwi Can is Resilience, and this week we talked about the different emotions that we can experience. It was great to discuss that it is ok to experience these varying emotions, but it is how we deal with them that matters most. It was great being back at Community Time with the junior syndicate singing songs, doing Zumba and mindfulness.

Term 2

Week 10

This week we celebrated all of our beautiful artwork at our Art Show. It was really impressive seeing all the other students' creations. We also cleaned up rubbish around the school as part of our Kiwi Can community project. We discovered rubbish hiding in all sorts of places, such as in bushes, up in trees and just dropped on the ground. We feel proud of our school grounds and how amazing they look. Today was a sad day for us all as it was Mr Hogan's last day. We celebrated his 13 years with us by holding a special assembly in his honour. There were lots of wet eyes in the hall.
Have a fantastic holiday and we are excited for Term 3.

Week 9

What a busy and exciting couple of weeks it has been! We have had to combine our classroom with Room 4 as the workmen were busy in our classroom putting in our new sliding doors and putting up our wall linings. We enjoyed this opportunity to make new friends and reinforce our Play Based Learning rules. We practiced hard for our speeches and selected three students to compete in the finals with the Junior Syndicate. We were very proud of them all.

Week 7

This week we have been busy practicing our performance for assembly. We are singing a special song that we're proud of and will keep it a secret until next week! Our sound of the week has been /u/ and we made some beautiful unicorns made out of the letter U.

Week 6

This week we were fortunate to having visiting artist, Zita, come to Room 1 to show us some of her beautiful paintings and sculptures. We enjoyed showing her some of our artwork we have been busy creating for our art show. We then drew some pictures of our family for her to see. In Kiwi Can we have been learning about the importance of respecting our environment and learned the difference between rubbish and recycling.

Week 5

This week we held our cross country at the Botanical Gardens. We ran to the best of our abilities and showed great resilience. We were very fortunate that many of our family and friends were able to attend and support us. We have also started practicing our speeches ready for the end of term. We have written about our favourite toy and are putting effort into speaking loudly and clearly.

Week 4

This week at school we have kicked it up a notch. We have started practicing our running for the school cross country and we have been busy writing speeches to deliver to our syndicate. Janet came to talk to us about oral health and the importance of brushing our teeth. We need to remember to do this twice a day, once after breakfast and once before bed.

Week 3

The highlight of our week has been creating beautiful artwork in preparation for our Art Exhibition. Our big buddies in Room 10 helped us draw animals from making shapes with our hands. Our turtles, giraffes and lizards all look stunning. We are also busy making dinosaur silhouettes.  In Maths, we have been learned about repeating patterns, and used the beads and threads to make them with a partner.

Week 2

This week at school we were extremely spoilt! We enjoyed a performance by the NZ Playhouse called 'The Tortoise and the Hare.' We laughed lots and learned that slow and steady wins the race. Miss Dunbar brought along her puppy Oscar to come and visit us in Room 1. We were allowed to pat and cuddle him, and watched him play fetch with his toys. Oscar is now allowed to stay at school all of the time, so we have been enjoying seeing him in the playground at playtimes.

Week 1

Welcome back to an exciting Term 2!! And what a start it has been. We have a brand new learning space as during the holidays, the builders came in and removed the wall into Room 2. So we have doubled our classroom! We love the new look of the room with the new paint and wall coverings. It is especially great being able to spread out to learn and explore. This week we also visited Harold and Rudi, and we learned about parts of the body and making healthy choices. Kiwi Can's topic for the term is Integrity, and we met our new leaders Chris, and Zara who is filling in for Gemma.

This week we made some beautiful painted owls with oogly eyes to celebrate the sound /o/. We have been making huge improvements in our phonics, which is transferring across to our reading and our writing. Needless to say, our teachers are extremely proud! We have enjoyed making our Room 1 stone wall whereby we all had a stone to design and write one way we contribute positively to our classroom. It is looking amazing!

Week 9

Sound of the Week: /t/
This week we enjoyed learning about what makes us special and unique. We had a great discussion about the different groups that we all belong to. Some of us belong to different sports groups, groups in the classroom, and groups around our school. We added these groups onto a buzzy bee or flower which is going to make a beautiful display in the classroom. Kiwi Can was another highlight where we learned about respecting other people's property. We made a picture and gave it to a friend for them to look after and bring back next week. Watch this space!

This term sure is flying by as we've hit the halfway mark already! Clowns, cats and caterpillars graced us with their presence this week. We have been filling in entries in our 5 Ways To Wellbeing book and celebrating each other's successes.
