The Snails reading group are working hard on learning some basic sight words. Here they are with Miss Harding, hard at work with their whiteboards. These guys love to see how many words that they can write in one minute! Well done Chance, Theo, Nova and Evie (absent).
Kite Flying fun with the plastic bag kites we made with Miss Harding!
Congratulations to Alex who is proudly showing off his reading log. Alex achieved the impressive milestone of 100 nights of amazing reading at home
We have been very excited to meet the new Principal of Timaru South School, Mr Brandon Payne. Mr Payne has popped in to Room 4 a few times to see us, and we wrote some stories about him this week. Welcome Mr Payne, you have joined the best school in Timaru!
We are also very happy to welcome Miss Tayla Harding to Room 4 for the next five weeks of school. Miss Harding is in her final year of teacher training and will spend her final teacher placement with us. Miss Harding will be teaching the class for three weeks and Mrs Haley will be the helper teacher. We are very fortunate to have you with us Miss Harding, and we wish you a happy and successful placement.
What a busy final week of term it has been. We have been working hard to complete our pieces of art work, to display in our school exhibition this week. Above are some pictures of Matthew, Rion and Evie at different stages of creating their sunflowers. We used dye and forks to print on the petals, a piece of polystyrene to print on the blue sky background and real leaves and corrugated cardboard to create the leaves and stems. We have also completed our city scales, based on Vincent Van Gogh's 'The Starry Night' painting.
Here's how some of the finished pieces looked - we're so proud!
This week we bid a sad farewell to our wonderful principal, Mr Mike Hogan, who is retiring. Mr Hogan, we will miss our 'Little Duckie", however we think you deserve a rest and we look forward to hearing about the adventures that you will enjoy throughout your retirement. Nga Manaakitanga Mr Hogan!
Over the past few weeks we have been working at home and at school on our speeches. These are all about our favourite toy. Chance, Alex and Sophie made Room 4 proud by representing us at the speech finals on Friday. Well done!
We were very lucky this week to meet an artist. Theresa Hart, Nevaeh's Nana, creates beautiful art works with resin. Theresa came along and spoke to our class about why she makes her works of visual art, how she makes them and what materials she uses. Nevaeh was a great helper. At the end Theresa gifted both Room 4 and Room 1 two pieces of her art each and the teachers were given a beautiful resin necklace. Theresa also gifted each child a box of their own special coloured pencils. We are excited to continue to work on our own works of art for the upcoming school exhibition! Thank you very much to Theresa and to Nevaeh also.
Welcome to Rion, Nevaeh and Kian, who have started school in Room 4. We are lucky to have three super new learners!
Mrs Haley has been away for 3 days this week looking after Asha, who has been sick. We have been fortunate enough to have had Mrs Chapman, Mrs White and Jess in Room 4. One of the things that we talk a lot about is being grateful for the special people and positive things that we have in our lives. Once a week every child in our room writes about something that they are grateful for, and we illustrate these and add them to our Class Gratitude Journal. This was Sophie's entry for the week.
Aurora and Alex have been working hard on recognising, counting and forming sets to 5 during maths time this week.
We also had our school Cross Country this week. The entire school went over to the Botanical Gardens to take part. It was a lovely afternoon and lots of families came to watch and support us. Here is Evie on the home stretch, running hard for Marsden House. Go Evie!
One of the highlights in Room 4 this week was a visit from Janet Quigley from WAVE. Janet came and talked to us about taking care of our teeth. She read us a great book about how to brush our teeth thoroughly and reminded us to brush morning and night. We were very excited to receive a new toothbrush and toothpaste of our own to take home.
We love exploring loose parts as part of our Play Based Learning Programme. Matthew and D'Artagnan had a great time creating a house and here they are getting ready to watch a movie in bed. 'Popcorn' was served and imaginary chicken nuggets were prepared by other children who were the 'chefs.' Play gives us the opportunity to create, build, imagine and explore.
We are getting better at being Mindful in Room 4. Here we are using 'Peace Out' as a Mindfulness Practice. Mindfulness is a great way for us to relax, let our brains rest and be ready to refocus for learning.
Welcome to school to this beautiful girl. Shakarna's sister Makailah used to be in Room 4 and Shakarna started school in Room 4 this week. Happy School Days Shakarna!
What a wonderful beginning to Term 2! We visited Harold and Rudi in the Life Education van this week. It was very exciting to see the lights, TAM, the video clips and photos of Harold growing up and of course to see Harold. Lots of our Mums came too and also enjoyed the experience as some of them remembered visiting Harold in the Life Education van when they were children! Harold and Rudi talked to us about the things we need to help us be strong, healthy learners. Check out the pictures above of our class with Harold and Rudi and some of the work we did about being happy and healthy.
Aurora and Chance were excited to collect our box of Duffy Books at the end of term Duffy Assembly. We can't wait to open that box and see our books!
On Tuesday the whole school went to a Duffy Theatre. We loved the story all about Duffy getting trapped in a computer game. Duffy had to use a book to help him to solve the problem of how to get out of the game!
Mrs White read us the Dr Seuss book, 'Bartholomew and the Oobleck' and we talked about what oobleck might be....we then went into Play-based Learning and enjoyed experimenting with lots of tactile things such as oobleck, slime, cooked rice and lux flakes. These children are creating concoctions of their own at the Potions Table!
We are very fortunate have Mrs White as a teacher in our class until the April school holidays. Mrs White is in the final stages of her training as a teacher and will be helping Mrs Haley in Room 4. Some of this time Mrs White will be taking control of the teaching and learning in Room 4 and Mrs Haley will be assisting. This will be exciting as Mrs White has lots of exciting ideas! Welcome to Timaru South School and to Room 4 Mrs White!
On Wednesdays we enjoy Play-Based Learning with some of the children from Room 8. Some children enjoyed playing fishing at the school fair and we were excited to have a turn to fish at school. Chance and Theo joined some of our Room 8 visitors to catch fish, octopus, turtles, squid and assorted other sea creatures!
We had a fabulous Junior Tabloid Sports event on Friday. The children got to take part in some fun activities such as the parachute, an obstacle course, soccer and an egg and spoon race. Here is D'Artagnan, delighted that he managed to balance his 'egg' all the way to the end of the egg and spoon race.
This week we have been learning about the letter sound for Cc. Here we are creating our luscious corn on the cob. We painted bubble wrap to create the corn and then cut out leaves to create our corn plant. Come check out our cornfield on the wall in Room 4!
Mrs Haley's friend Shell brought her animal friends to visit Room 4. We got to meet and cuddle Moro the baby guinea pig, some mini-lop baby rabbits, Tahlia and Chopper the turtles and Asha and Mia the chickens. The special guest was Buddha the Bearded Dragon and Elijah was brave enough to let Buddha sit on his head!
We love having our weekly Buddy Time session with our Big Buddies from Room 10. This week Mrs McFarlane helped us to make monsters by painting one side of the paper, folding it over and then adding some details on with paper. Evie loved creating this colourful monster with her buddies Maddy and Maria-Moana
This week we have had a busy week. We have been learning the routines for Mindfulness and Circle time. Our class rules are up and running. For maths we are working on forming and recognising the numbers to 5. We used our fingerprints and paint to make some numbers, using the correct formation. They turned out great!
Welcome back to Room 4 in 2019 to Elijah and Chance, and also to Alex, Evie and D'Artagnan who have started school this week. We are also lucky enough to have Matthew and Theo join us from Room 1.
We have had a lovely first week at school, settling everyone in. We have written our class rules, talked about using our WITS (walk away, ignore, talk to a teacher) to solve any problems in the playground and have been practising our school 4R values (being Responsible, Resourceful, Respectful and Resilient). We're looking forward to lots of learning, play and fun together!
