Room 6 - 2019
Check this page every week to see what we have been up to. Enjoy!
Another great week in Room 6! Damien and Naieti we lucky enough to go to the art gallery and see their art displayed at the Artarama. Well done boys!
This week for technology we are learning about the process of making something. We talked about what would be needed if we were to set up our own cookie making business. What facilities and jobs would we have to allocate to make sure they were getting made fast and could keep up with the demand. We followed this cookie recipe which helped us identify the jobs. They tasted delicious!
Exciting times during technology we are making Ginger Beer! We have made our bug and now we have to feed it for seven days before we bottle it to ferment it. Here is Devana feeding the bug with one teaspoon of ginger and one teaspoon of raw sugar. We've very excited to taste it in a couple weeks!
Another busy week in Room 6 with getting some great reading and writing done! We worked pretty hard and got to get a very fluffy visitor on Friday as a treat!
For technology this week we were learning about structures and the process of making them. We had a go at making spaghetti towers. Our highest tower was 45cm tall!
We got to welcome our new principal to the school - Mr Payne! We loved getting to know him. We are also lucky enough to have Mr Payne's children Ilysa and Micah join us this term in Room 6.
This week all our hard work paid off, when we got see all three of our art pieces featuring in the South School Art Show. We also had a great time looking around at other classes work.
This week we have been working hard to finish our art pieces for the art show next week. We have been experimenting with different ways to use paint. In this picture we are splattering paint onto the paper. We had heaps of fun doing this and paint was everywhere!
Our school received a book called 'The Six Foot Rat.' It told the story of Monty and Archie who were saved from getting tested on in a lab. We decided to write about why we think that animals shouldn't be tested on. We all think it is pretty unfair!
We enjoy our buddy time each Friday. This week we learnt about Matariki. We coloured in a feather and wrote a wish for the Maori New Year. We wished for things like good health in our families and for us to all be safe.
Big week for Room 6 this week! As all our hard practises payed off in our assembly performance. We performed a waiata and an action song with pois. Here is Molia sharing her mihi with the school. Great job Room 6!
On Friday we had cross country! We all tried our best and had a great time doing so. Congratulations to Riley, Hunter, Haneul and Jenica who placed. Awesome work.
What a wonderful week we have had in Room 6. Doing all things fun from creating art for the art show which is at the end of the term, and making pois for our performance at assembly in week 6. We look forward to the busy weeks ahead.
On Friday, Room 6, 7, 8 and 9 went to the botanical gardens for an 'Autumn Scavenger Hunt.' Before we left we discussed what seasons were and what seasons there are. We had lots of fun exploring the Autumn elements at the gardens. Especially the leaves! There were so many.
We had a pretty cute visitor come to our buddy session with Room 10! We drew the other half of Oscar's face alongside our buddy. Its a lot of fun having a puppy in the classroom, we hope he visits again.
First week back of the term and we were lucky enough to go and see Harold! Harold taught us about how we are all different and unique. We also got to learn about some pretty cool body parts and what their jobs are in keeping us alive.
On Tuesday we got given Duffy Books! We all felt grateful to be given two books for free. The philosophy behind the Duffy programme is to break the cycle of 'booklessness'. We talked about how important reading is and we are all going to make more of an effort to read more in our spare time!
The topic for this term has been "Feeling Good About Ourselves." We have been reading and studying the book Wonder by R. J. Palacio. August the main character doesn't look like other students. He gets picked on and bullied about his appearance.
We thought of ways we could use kindness to help people like August feel better about themselves and build their confidence. We have created artwork inspired by the illustrations in the book and wrote 10 ways we could can be kind.
Every second week the Junior School has been doing 'Community Time' in the hall. We use this time to sing, dance, and do mindfulness.
Room 6 always leads by example because they are the older students in the syndicate. We have helped the younger ones learn moves for songs like One Day a Taniwha and Oma Rapeti.
At the end of the sessions we usually have a key message we want to reinforce. This week we looked at anti-bullying following the video called Oat the Goat.
Every Friday Room 6 have buddies with Room 11. We love having the older students come along and teach us new exciting things.
The past few Fridays they have been teaching us how to do activities on SeeSaw. This week however we went outside for a game called 'evolution.' As you can see below Vai and Kobie are having a ball!
This week Room 6 is lucky enough to have been doing Digital Ignition classes with Tamati. In these classes we have been learning about technology and how it is all around us. We couldn’t believe how much technology is at our own homes.
We even got to play with robots. In groups we had to program the robot to get from one house to another on a mat.
We have thoroughly enjoyed these classes and cannot wait to use our new skills in the class and at home!
On Friday we had Tabloid Sports with the Junior School. Room 6 was split into six groups with all mixed ages and abilities. We used this time to practice our leadership skills by being role models to the junior students.
There were lots of different activities to do! We participated in soccer, egg and spoon race, parachute exercises, obstacle courses and relays. We had an absolute blast!
We have had some fun this week creating our own paintbrushes! We went outside and collected a couple of short branches. We then tied them tightly together. We put our brushes to test using paint and found that each paintbrush created a different texture. We tried different ways to use the paintbrushes by dragging, twirling and dabbing them. These pieces of art we have done will be the backgrounds of our self-potraits, come into Room 6 and have a look!
Another busy week for the students in Room 6! We cannot believe it is already the end of week 4.
This week we went to the playground to inspire us for our recount writing. We planned an obstacle course and had few goes at doing it. Then we hurried back to class to write about what we did, focusing on using past tense verbs. Have a look at Riley's recount below...
What a week Room 6 has had! We have been busy learning about writing in past tense which we know as recount writing. This week we wrote about what we do in our morning routine.
On Thursday we celebrated Pal-entines Day! Instead of Valentines Day we decided to use the day to show appreciation towards our pals. We talked about why it is good to tell people how you appreciate them and how it makes the person feel. We got a mystery person in the class to write a card to. At the end of the day we got a card from someone, there were so many happy faces as we all read the cards.
On Friday we had our first Community Time with the junior syndicate. Room 6 were all great roll models for the younger ones. During Community Time we did phonics, Jump Jam, mindfulness and singing. We had a blast!
This week we have bought in some more routines like KiwiCan, Assembly and visiting the Library. We have been talking about how we can use our 4 R's during these routines.
Also this week we have done more on learning about what identity is. We learnt that identity is all about us, what makes us who we are. We were surprised with how many ethnicities were in our class. We think it is pretty cool to have different cultures to celebrate. All these cultures make Room 6 very special!
We look forward to a very hot weekend!
This week we have been very busy working on our teamwork skills. As a class we have made up our own treaty with six simple rules: be a role model, know when to talk and when to listen, make sure everything is put away and tidy, use positive words, move around the classroom appropriately and treat people the way you want to be treated. We think this will make our classroom run smoothly.
This week we have also been writing about our favourite memory from summer and learning some new P.E games like medic ball and tic, tac, toe.
Room 6 looks forward to a very busy term ahead!
