Room 7 - 2019

Welcome to our Room 7 class page where Mrs Brown and a fantastic group of Year 4 & 5 students will share some of our work.

Term 3

Week 4

In Room 7 we have been using the story of The Three Little Pigs as our starting point for our reading, art, drama and writing. After listening to, reading and then viewing many different versions of this fairy tale we got creative. Some students made houses made of LEGO, others used cardboard, ice cream sticks, paper and other materials to create theirs. We enjoyed the puppet shows with the characters from the story and there were many different versions of the original story.

Week 3

Mrs Chapman worked with us on Tuesday and Wednesday while Mrs Brown was taking the Year 7/8 Rugby  10's team to a competition. We have had fun at Kiwi Can and focused on reading body language to help us when we communicate with others. We are into our 3rd week of our Friday Arts Activities and enjoying the opportunity to create.

Week 2

Next week we have 3 way interviews with teachers, parents/caregivers and our students having an opportunity to share successes and plan things to work on. In Maths we are learning how to use fractions - a little scary for many at the start however once 'it clicks' for many students they are able to work out complex problems.
Week 1
Welcome back to school for Term 3. We have another busy term with many activities and events such as our 3 way interviews (student/teacher/whanau - parent /caregiver), gymnastics, and our Ski Skate trip. Our focus is Digital Technology where we will learn about not only about using technology but how to be the 'creators' of algorithmns (instructions) to make programmes used in technology e.g. fitness apps.

Term 2

Week 10

Welcome to Tanisha who joins us in room 7. We enjoyed visiting the Botanical gardens with our Kiwi Can leaders and gave something back to our community by cleaning up any rubbish. We were surprised how much we found. Our term finished with a final assembly where we farewelled Mr Hogan as principal.

Week 9

Our speech finals were this week with Ivy, Anderson and Ocean representing our class in the senior Year 4-6 grade. Well done to these 3 students for creating and presenting quality speeches on Speed skating, Pets and Snow Wolves respectively and particularly to Ivy for getting 2nd place. While Mrs Brown took her Year 7/8 Jump Jam team to the SC Competition the rest of our class had time in other senior classes - a fun experience for everyone. Well done to Jake who was in the Year 4-6 Jump Jam team.

Week 8

Room 7 created Thank you letters for Rotary who provided fantastic dictionaries for every Year 4 student. This generous donation was gratefully received with many students excited about the colourful, easy to use books with interesting diagrams and pictures. We are wondering what we could do to repay this kind act.

Week 7

Room 7 have had fun creating more art work for our school art exhibition. We have looked at artists such as C.F. Goldie. We were amazed  how life like his Māori portraits are and how expensive his art is. Some of our class have presented their speeches on topics from family members, Speed Skating to Lynxs.

Week 6

This was a short week with Queen's Birthday. We looked at the origins of this holiday with Mrs Smith. We enjoyed using the Story Starters to create our own endings to stories written by other New Zealanders such as Cohen Hollaway who is an actor. Our building skills were demonstrated during Play Based Learning. I wonder what else we could create?

Week 5

Talofa! We have been learning a little more Samoan language and culture during Samoan language week. Thanks to Chris who is helping with our pronunciation. During Maths we have been learning about Measurement - including time, weight, length and distance. With Mrs Chapman we created Robots and worked out their exact area another aspect of measuring. Although many of us were slightly , we have been looking forward to our school Cross Country held at the Botanical gardens this week. Luckily it was a beautiful sunny day. Sange Malama has joined our class as our fabulous Teacher Aide - we are very privileged to have her in our class. Welcome!

Week 4

We have been researching and starting to write our speeches. Several students have presented their speeches to our class in order to perfect and practise before our finals later in the term. Our class celebrated with a shared lunch in the Aqua Garden after earning enough class points.

Week 3

Welcome to Isiah Frewen who joins our classroom from Bluestone. We have been learning about measurement in Maths, returning things to rightful owners and how to learn from our mistakes in Kiwi Can. On Friday we visited the Botanical Gardens with Rooms 6, 8 and 9 and did an Autumn scavenger hunt with our Buddies. It was a beautiful calm and sunny day - perfect for being outside and enjoying nature right on our door step.

Week 2

We had a fantastic visit to the South Canterbury Museum to tie in with our " All Creatures Great and Small". Our class enjoyed looking around all the exhibits and being able to touch and examine a massive Green Turtle shell and a very long snake skin.

Week 1

A rainy first  day of term meant we were inside all day unable to start our running sessions for fitness, luckily room 7 students enjoy dancing inside. We are looking forward to our Life Education sessions and learning through  our Visual Arts - All Creatures Great and Small focus. We had a special visitor this week -Miss Dunbar and her gorgeous fluffy new puppy Oscar - what a fantastic surprise.

Term 1

Week 11

We finished our term with a combined games day for Kiwi Can with Rooms 6 & 9. It was noisy but fun. Room 7 are keen on making iMovies and creating their stories in parts which shows their fantastic imaginations. As Easter is during the school holidays we created sock Bunnies filled with rice. Although it was messy  it showed how fantastic creations can be made by Recycling  odd socks and using cheap items such as rice. Have happy and safe Holidays!

Week 10

Week 10 whizzed by with fun activities such as Duffy Theatre, Jump Jam trials, and the Play Pod being out. We had more spelling testing which showed how fabulous Room 7 are at being respectful and patient with others as the lists were very long. George and Willow got assembly awards for being kind and working hard particularly in their Poppy Art painting and drawing. We have been learning about ANZAC Day and using this to create Poppy Art.

Week 9

Well done to this weeks Duffy Book recipients Caleb Taylor and Awa Manawatu for working well with everyone and positivity respectively. Mrs Chapman worked with us this week teaching us about Hoiho - the yellow eyed penguin -creating the coloured faces was a real hit. We welcome Logan who joins our class. Kiwi Can again was very popular and frequently mentioned as a highlight of the week. Our week finished with a calm and focused buddy session with Room 8 - it was fantastic to see such great cooperation. Nice work Room 7!

Week 8

Our class has been discussing kindness and it is pleasing to see this demonstrated on a daily basis. After last weeks tragic events in Christchurch we are focusing now on looking forward and how we can make our class and community a better place starting with kindness. We finished the week with our class reward - a shared lunch which was delicious and enjoyed by us all. There was such a range of food and so much that we invited special guests from around the school to join us. Levi Duggan (who was nominated by our class as a role model to them)  was dressed up in a tutu and T shirt with "Kia Kaha" written on it as part of Mufti Day - to raise money for the people of Christchurch. A great choice Room 7. Melody Donehue was also nominated as a role model. Diane (SWIS), Mr Hogan, Mrs Sidaway and Keira (our Room 8 buddy) with Jacs also joined us. It is fantastic to see our children recognise other fabulous students in the school as ones they look up to.

Week 7

Week 7 started with Digital Ignition lessons with Matua Tamiti - we all enjoyed learning how to do algorithms using the Scratch app to create story boards with moving and talking characters. We finished the week creating Origami shapes with our buddies in Room 8. What a fantastic array of cats, dogs, penguins and crabs. Chris and Ashton were the recipients of the Duffy books for their great work this week.

Week 6

We welcomed Chris Maaleelu to Room 7 and look forward to having him in our class. We have continued making Bath Bombs and Salts to sell at our school fair and had more reading tests. Our room presented at our Assembly and started with an imovie trailer of some of our mahi. We had our YMCA dance which everyone joined in with and also demonstrated some of our Yoga poses we have learnt in Mindfulness. Our Waka theme of "E waka eke noa - We are all in this together" was really important and evident today with everyone fully participating.

Week 5

In Room 7 we made Bath Bombs which are different colours and have essential oils to smell. After taking them home to test out we made another batch which we will sell at the school fair. It took a bit of trial and error to get the right colour we wanted.  We loved the way our classroom smelt and made us feel relaxed. At our senior assembly Ashlee and Anderson received Duffy books for working well with all students and settling into Room 7 respectively.

Week 4

Each week 1 or 2 students have the opportunity to write about our week - Wiki.  Briahna wrote the following: On Monday we learnt how to play Grenade.
On Tuesday we did circle time.
On Wednesday we went to the Library and did PBL.
On Thursday we also did circle time (again) and did Kiwi Can.
On Friday we had no milk, went to assembly and discussed the Bike/Run. We brought our homework back.   Ali loved Kiwi Can. Hayley liked playing with Charlotte. Liam liked building his boat that no one destroyed.

Our assembly awards went to Ayla for showing kindness and being responsible and to Caleb R for his fantastic writing about Tackling the Pterodactyl.

Week 3

We have started to settle into our routines in Room 7 with daily diary writing, mindfulness breathing, reading groups, and maths sessions. On Thursdays and Fridays we use a range of mathematical equations and clues to solve the mystery with this week a naughty gnome being our culprit. Students learn to reorganise information and eliminate suspects to reveal the clues. On Friday Room 7 showed what great big buddies we have when helping Room 8 students complete reflections sheets on Seesaw.

Week 2

Waitangi Day was the focus of our week - with the holiday midweek and our learning centred around Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi). We enjoyed our first session of Kiwi Can and gained several points in the RESPECT challenge by showing the 4R's. Mrs White opened up the library for us - we are grateful to have access to so many fantastic books each week. Our school picnic and BBQ was awesome - particularly flying down the slippery water slide.

Week 1

We have all returned to school eager to learn - even with extremely hot days the class is enthusiatic and showing the 4R's. Each day we have had our daily fitness (e.g. fitness circuits), mIndfulness sessions where we learn to calm and focus our brains. We are creating our class treaty with everyone brainstorming ideas how to make our classroom the best it can, where everyone can learn and feel safe and secure.
