Room 8 - 2019
We love mindfulness. We try to practise everyday. Here we are trying to deep breathe with our teddies sitting on our tummies so we can see them going up and down.
This week Constable Deb came to talk to us about Keeping Ourselves Safe. We have learnt our phone numbers and addresses and also that we should call our body parts by the correct name.
This week we had a technology challege. We had to create a pirate boat that would float out of materials we found at home and some from school.
This week was Tongan Language week. We had an amazing presentation by our Tongan community in the school hall. Keira was in the seated dance. She was amazing and loved every minute of the production. Well done Keira.
Mrs Smith has been doing lots of technology with us on Wednesdays. This week we had to design a marble run and then she had lots of different materials for us to use to turn our design into our own material run.
This week we had the ASB come and talk to us about money. Amy taught us about all the name of the coins and the dollars and the difference between 'wants and needs'. 'Needs' are things like food, clothes and shelter and we have to spend money on them but 'wants' are things that we should save for. She said we had superpowers and that it is important to 'save save save' our money.
On Saturday Indie went to the Art Gallery to collect her prize at Artarama. We love your pink face painting Indie. There are lots and lots of other artwork entered by all the schools in South Canterbury. Indie got first prize in the painting and drawing section for Year 1 to 3 children. Well done Indie.
This week Angus brought his some cars along to school to share with his Maths groups. We are learning to count objects and make sets to 5. Thank you Angus. You are kind.
We had lots of fun with our, not so invisible buckets today. We are going to make an iMovie for assembly about how to full other peoples buckets and how to keep our own full. Today we visited Mr Payne, Mrs White and Mrs Sidaway. We have also been busy in our class this week learning how to write stories on Seesaw.
This term we are using this book to help us learn about how to manage our feelings and how we can be a good friend and a happier person. By reading this book we learned that everyone carries around an invisible bucket. The purpose of the bucket is to hold all our good thoughts and feelings about ourselves. You feel good and happy when your bucket is full and very sad and lonely when your bucket is empty. Everyone around us feels the same. This week we are going to learn about how we can fill people's bucket in the our class, the school and at home and by filling other people's buckets we are also filling our own.
Welcome to Term 3. This is going to be a very interesting term with a new principal to get to know. Welcome, Mr Payne. Our unit for the term is related to technology challenges, as well as learning about Financial Literacy and Keeping Ourselves Safe. We have a Maths week and practising skipping and gymnastics. A busy and fun term planned. We also welcome Mrs Smith who will be looking after our class on Wednesday as Mrs Nicholson is having maternity leave.
The 'Art Show' was great with children selecting three pieces they were proud of to display. Everyone did very well with Indie and her Mum creating a dolphin sculpture for the challenge section and receiving an award. Well done to Xzaviah, Jonah, Tyson, Keira, Taurian, Nia, James and Tolofina for their awards.
This week was busy as we had to finish off some of our work for next weeks art show. Skyla also did very well in the Junior Speech competition where she got third. She spoke about her favourite toy. Well done Skyla. We are all very proud of you. You were very brave standing up and doing your speech in front of all the parents, children and staff.
This week we had lots of fun creating a new piece of artwork. We were learning about texture, printing with different objects and an artist called Jackson Pollock. Jackson painted by flicking the paint at his canvases. We tried it outside and even though we tried to cover the ground and ourselves we got paint everywhere. We had so much fun and our paintings are so bright and colourful.
This week Janet from Wave brought Dr. Rabbit to visit us to check that we were all brushing our teeth properly and coughing in our arm so we don't spread germs to everyone. We all got a High Five and a hug. from Dr Rabbit.
This week Zita Waldron an artist who paints and makes sculptures came to visit the classes. She showed us one of her painting and one of someone else's painting who she likes. She likes the painting because it looks like children have painted it and it makes her smile when she looks at it. Mrs Waldron looked at our paintings of the fish and we looked at her sculpture a bird that we were able to hold. It was very heavy.
This week Janet from Wave and the Health Nurse came to talk to us about 'Sneeze Safe". It is important to cover a sneeze. You can sneeze into your arm or into your hand. If you cough or sneeze into your hand you have to wash your hand. We put a little sparkle on one person's hand and then shook hands. Look how the sparkles got on everyone. That is what happens to the germs in people's sneezes.
We got some new alphabet letters. They are really good for making words we are learning to spell and write. They are lots of fun to use.
This week we have been practising our skills with big balls. We have been soccer stars kicking the ball up and down the field to a partner and today we are being netballers practising our shooting
This week we are starting to make a fish picture. The first part of our artwork was to make the sea. We dyed the paper green and blue and then covered the sheet with salt. We used white crayon on the paper to make it look more like the sea.
This week we had two visitors in our class. Millie has two new pet rats and they came and spent the day in our class. They are very busy climbing and eating but most of the day they spent sleeping. We wrote some great rat stories.
We have an interesting term coming up with our focus on Visual Arts. My favourite subject so lots of fun to be had by all. We have the cross country in four weeks that we are training for and also finish off with speeches.
We are very pleased this term to have a new smart Tv in our room. We don't have to have the curtains pulled all the time now. It is great for all sorts of interesting things we are learning about. Here we are doing our fitness with Go Noodle.
Welcome children and parents to Room 8 Timaru South. I hope everyone has had a happy and restful holiday and are ready for an interesting and busy term. The first couple of weeks we will be concentrating on getting to know each other, classroom routines, making our class rules, the 4R's - Respect, Resilience, Responsibility, being Resourceful, how to deal with problems with others, WITS - Walk away, Ignore, Tell an adult, Say "I don't like that because....". This takes time and is vital for a happy, learning class. Please ensure that your children are at school before the bell at 9 o'clock with their reading folder, new stationery, all named and a healthy lunch. Children are encouraged to drink water at school only and are given a piece of fruit and milk after the first play break as we strongly encourage healthy eating at our school as research shows that many of the packeted processed foods/snacks hinder concentration. Thank you for your support Jo O'Sullivan
We are starting a new artwork in Room 8. We have two fish in our classroom so we decided to draw, paint, print, cut and glue an artwork about them. We have been learning about drawing our pictures nice and big and using a strong heavy line for the outline. This artwork will take us several days.
We enjoy Maths. In our class, we have three Maths groups. This group is working on learning the patterns with 5. They are using ten frames and beads, then using their fingers to check they are right.
We got some more big Lego blocks from the Fchool fair. We love creating things in Play-Based Learning. We have an amazing collection now.
We made some origami animals with our buddies this week. We had to read and then follow the instructions and then work with our buddy to make a dog, or cat or a penguin. They were really cool.
We have been learning about monarch butterflies. We had one in the classroom but is ate all the swan plant so we had to put it outside on the big swan plant. Our caterpillar turned into a chrysalis. We waited for about two weeks and today the chrysalis split open and out came a beautiful monarch. The butterflies wings were small for a start but after a while, the wings grew. The butterfly kept flapping its wings to dry them.
This week most of us finished our abstract self-portrait. We are learning about colouring within the lines, using a brush correctly and not over painting.
We have been working hard in Maths learning about ordering numbers to ten and the numbers that come before and after.
On Friday our Buddy class came in and helped us learn how to write our weekly reflections on seesaw. We read books together, tidied our desks and finished some colouring in we had started last week.
We have been learning about time this week. We talked about morning, afternoon and evening as well as learning the days of the week and the months of the year. We made a bear clock with o'clock times on it.
This week we have been getting to know each other. It has been a very busy and very hot week at school. In the afternoon we practised mindfulness.
